Make your stories work: turn a bare photo into a post people can find

I keep a small Instagram for my dogs — Samoyeds, the white "dogs of the north." For a long time I posted the easy way: a nice photo, maybe a heart, and that was it. The people who already followed me left a like, and then the post disappeared. Nobody new ever found us.

This week a puppy I had raised, Brisa, came back to stay for five days while her family was travelling. She walked in, recognised the house, recognised her mother, and lay down beside her as if she'd never left. I wanted that moment to actually reach people — not sit there as one more quiet photo.

So I changed two small things, and neither took more than a couple of minutes.

First, the words. A photo tells Instagram nothing on its own. I gave an AI the picture plus the things only I know — that these are Samoyeds, that Brisa was born here in Miramar, that this was a mother and daughter reunited — and asked it to write the caption using the words people actually search: "samoyedo", "cachorros", "Miramar". Not "qué lindos".

Second, I made the story do work instead of just existing. I added a line of text, an emoji slider asking "¿Se parecen, madre e hija?", and a link back to the post. The slider is one drag — people answer without thinking, and each answer tells Instagram the post is worth showing to someone new.

For the first time it felt like the post was reaching outward, not just sitting still.

Reproduce this

Prerequisites: an Instagram account for your work or project (a free Business/Creator account also unlocks the Insights that prove it worked). One good photo of something you made or that matters to you.

Your agent will need from you — a 2-minute interview (ask these BEFORE writing anything):

  • What is your account about, and who follows it? (the niche sets the searchable words)
  • What language should the posts be in?
  • For each photo: what is it / what's happening, and the story or occasion behind it — the things only you know. The AI can see the photo; it can't know the backstory, and the backstory is what makes it authentic and findable.
  • Do you want local reach? If so, your city or neighbourhood.
  • What voice fits you — cozy, playful, poetic, professional?
  • Any names or details you're happy to share publicly — and any you're NOT (children, exact address, clients).

Steps:

  1. Give a vision-capable AI the photo and the interview answers. Free options: ChatGPT (https://chatgpt.com), Gemini (https://gemini.google.com), or Claude (https://claude.ai). Ask it for: one feed caption with 5 hashtags (mix broad + local + niche), three short story texts, and one interaction — a poll question OR an emoji-slider prompt — telling it to weave your searchable words in naturally (what it is, the style, your city).
  2. Post to the feed ONCE, as a carousel: best shot first, then 2–3 close-ups. Do not post the same photo to the feed every day — the feed rewards variety, and stories are where the same subject can reappear. Paste the caption.
  3. Through the week, post the stories. On each, add: the text overlay (the "Aa" button); one interaction sticker — the Poll ("Encuesta") or the emoji slider ("Control deslizante"), which is a single drag and pulls the most answers; and a link back to your post (open the feed post → share → "Add to your story" / "Agregar a tu historia") so the story becomes a doorway to the post.
  4. Prefer words people search over greetings: "[what it is] [style] [your city]" beats "happy birthday".

Verify:

  • Right away (structure): the post carries the words someone would actually search, each story has an interaction sticker and a tappable link to the post, and the caption reads like you, not like an ad.
  • Over the next few days (proof it worked): open Insights for the post and the stories. Look for poll/slider taps and link taps (people interacted, didn't just scroll), and the real signal — reach or views from accounts that do NOT already follow you. A bare photo shows almost none of this.

Note: no agent or tool can confirm where your post ranks in Instagram search — that index is private, personalised, and has no public API. Judge it by the interactions and the non-follower reach in Insights, not by searching for yourself.
